How To Choose The Kitchen Cabinets That Are Right For You

When you walk into a kitchen, one of the most visually enticing and functionally appealing components is undoubtedly the cabinets. They have a significant impact on the overall design of your kitchen and play a major role in the overall feel of your space. So where do you start? Here are a few tips to help you choose the kitchen cabinets that are right for you:

Choosing Your Style

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where meals are prepared and shared, memories are made, and laughter echoes through the walls. A kitchen is so much more than just a place to cook and eat; it’s a gathering place, a sanctuary, and a reflection of our personal style. That’s why when it comes to choosing the style of our kitchen cabinets, it’s important to select a design that not only looks beautiful but also fits the overall aesthetic of our home.

Kitchen cabinets come in a variety of colors, materials, and styles, each with its own benefits. For example, raised-panel cabinets are a classic choice that can give your kitchen a traditional feel. Shaker-style cabinets are another popular option that offers both style and functionality. If you’re looking for a more modern look, flat-panel cabinets are a great choice. They provide clean lines and can be paired with a variety of hardware options. There are also many different colors and finishes to choose from, so you can find the perfect look for your kitchen.

Whether you’re renovating your kitchen or simply looking to update old cabinets to fit your new design, there’s a style of cabinet that’s perfect for you.

Size

Like everything else in a kitchen, size and how it fits is important when choosing your cabinets.

Stock cabinets are usually the most affordable option and can be found at most home improvement stores. Semi-custom cabinets offer more sizing options than stock cabinets and can be ordered from many kitchen retailers. They’re a good choice if you want more control over your kitchen’s layout, but they can be more expensive than stock cabinets.

Custom cabinets are made to order and offer the most flexibility in terms of size and layout. However, they’re also the most expensive option. These are often built by a local contractor or carpenter. Here at Morales Brothers, we specialize in complete custom cabinetry to fit your needs with well-thought-out design and care.

Function

When choosing new kitchen cabinets, always keep function in mind first and foremost. After all, the most beautiful cabinets in the world won’t do you much good if they don’t fit your needs. think about how you use your kitchen on a daily basis and what type of storage you need.

If you’re a serious cook, you’ll want to make sure you have enough space for all of your pots, pans, and spices. If you entertain often, you’ll need to make sure there’s enough room to store plates, glasses, and serving platters. And if you have small children, you’ll want to choose cabinets that are safe and easy for them to use.

By taking the time to assess your needs, you can be sure to choose cabinets that will make your kitchen more functional and efficient.

Material

When it comes to kitchen cabinets, the material you choose will have a lasting impact on both the look and feel of your space. For example, natural wood cabinets can add warmth and character, while laminate or glass cabinets can create a brighter and more modern look.

If durability is your main concern, then opt for cabinets made from hardwoods or MDF (medium-density fiberboard), which is a composite used in cabinetry and other furniture. However, keep in mind that these materials can be more expensive. Ultimately, the best cabinet material for your kitchen depends on your personal preferences and budget.

Removing Old Cabinets

removing old cabinets

Once you’ve chosen what you’re going to replace your kitchen cabinets with, it’s time to remove those old and outdated cabinets from your wall.

The first thing you need to do is empty out the cabinet. Remove all the shelves and any contents that might be inside or attached including knobs, pulls, and hinges. Next is removing it from the wall. Take your time with this process so as to not damage the wall it is attached to.

There are usually two attachment points: one at the top of the cabinet and one at the bottom. The cabinets are attached to the wall usually by screws, nails, and caulking to hold the cabinets in place. Cut through the caulk between the countertop and the backsplash where it connects to the cabinets. Then, use a pry bar to remove the trim around the bottom of the cabinets. With the trim removed, you should be able to see screws holding the cabinets to the wall.

If there are screws holding the cabinet in place, use a screwdriver to remove them. If there are nails, use a hammer to gently pull them out of the wall. In most cases, the cabinet will be mounted on a pair of brackets that are screwed into the wall. To remove the cabinet, start by unscrewing the brackets from the wall. With the top and bottom attachment points taken care of, the cabinet should be free from the wall. You may need to wiggle it back and forth a bit to get it loose and have someone help you bring them down as cabinets can be heavy.

With a little effort, you should be able to easily disconnect your old cabinets and get them ready for replacement.

Hanging New Cabinets

Now you’re ready to get your new cabinets up on the wall! This space should be measured beforehand to ensure that your new set of cabinets fit in the previous space, and if they are custom cabinets, a professional carpenter or contractor will have taken care of the careful measuring and sizing.

Once you’ve done that, it’s time to start attaching the cabinet rails to the wall. For this step, you’ll need a drill, a screwdriver, and some wall screws. Mark the studs in the wall so that you know where to drill for the screws. Drill pilot holes into the rails, then use the screwdriver to drive the screws into the wall. Next, it’s time to attach the cabinets to the rails. Again, you’ll need a drill and some screws, but this time you’ll also need some wood screws. Drill pilot holes through both the cabinet and the rail, then use the wood screws to attach them together.

Begin by attaching the cabinet bases to the wall using screws or nails. Level them and secure them to the wall studs using screws or nails. Once the cabinets are prepared, they can be attached to the wall using screws and brackets. Finally, make sure to level the cabinets and add any trim or molding as necessary. Then begin reassembling the cabinets with any additional hardware like doors, hinges, knobs, and any other necessary materials. Congratulations, your new cabinets have been installed!

Painting or Refinishing Your Cabinets

Sometimes your existing cabinets just new a new facelift. If your kitchen cabinets are starting to show their age, you may want to consider simply painting or refinishing your cabinets.

Just be sure to prep the surfaces properly before you start painting, and use high-quality paint for the best results.

The first step is to remove all of the cabinet doors and hardware.  Clean the cabinets thoroughly with a degreaser or TSP solution, then sand them down to create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Be sure to wear a respirator mask while sanding, and open windows for ventilation.

Next, sand down the surfaces to create a smooth base for the new paint or stain. If you’re planning on painting your cabinets, you’ll also need to apply a primer before painting. This will help the paint properly adhere to the cabinets and prevent chipping or peeling down the road.

Once the primer is dry, you can begin painting or staining your cabinets. When applying paint or stain, be sure to work in small sections and use even strokes. After the paint or stain is dry, reattach the cabinet doors and hardware. And voila—you’ve got yourself brand-new-looking kitchen cabinets!

It is important to take your time in choosing the right kitchen cabinets. Not only do you want them to look great, but they also need to be functional for your needs.
